Film Trailer Analysis - Double Indemnity trailer.
Media language:
In the beginning of the trailer the film is introduced by the narrator, he mentions about the film and also the director of the film. This film was made in 1944 yet still follows the conventions of the everyday trailers we see today. This emphasises the common nature of the films in the 20th century. The trailer gives a brief explanation of the film using the very best and tense cuts from the film; this shows the audience that the film is worth watching. The trailer is there to help the audience configure what the film will be about, this trailer does this very well, by the use of the quote “how could I know that murder could smell like honey suckle” shows the audience that the film will be including some sort of crime and murder. This will help to attract the target audience. Being a film noir, smoke is used in the trailer to give the film an edgy feel, again attracting the target audience.
In the final stage of the trailer the narrator speaks about the film production company, showing the audience that the production company is successful and well known, therefore encouraging the audience to see the film.
Institutions:
The institution that funds the film (Paramount ) is very successful and at tat time was the most successful film production company, therefore when the audience sees this they will want to go and see the film.
Genre:
The genre of the film is a crime/film noir/thriller; this helps the film apply to many different audiences which will help maximise profit. The trailer helps to show the audience the three different genres very well, with the use of camera shots and speech. The speech in the trailer is where the trailer really explains its genre with the quotes it mentioned earlier. The main character has cuts from the film and when these are shown at the start of the film it is clear to the audience what the film genre is. Also in the middle of the trailer we see what actions the main character and the woman are doing and how she is hiding from the detective, again showing the audience that the film will have an element of crime.
Representation:
This film is represented in such a way that people are able to debate about the film and try and work out the result of the crime the characters commit. The trailer will affectively tease the audience as they will want to know what sort of crime the characters commit. Also the film trailer will allow for debate about who will commit the crime/murder, again stimulating the audience’s interest in the film and causing them to want to see the film.
Audience:
The audience for this film can vary depending on which of the three genres they are interested in. The diverse genre allows for a wider range of target audience. However the main target audience for this film will be the thriller audience as this is the main aspect of the film. The age range for the film would be from 15 onwards as the film does involve murder and therefore could be inappropriate for younger audiences.
Narrative:
The film involves many different complicated twists. The audience can realise this from the film trailer. The trailer explains a love for the main character and how their love for each other causes them to commit the ultimate crime. The audience are then allowed to make their own assumptions about how the film will play out from there. This will cause them to want to go and see the film, as they wish to find out what happens to the tow main characters in the film. This story line is helped by the narrator in the film trailer, explaining the beginning o the film and who the producers of the film are.
Ideologies:
The film will help to create different beliefs on the attitudes on the film its self. The film creates two different views that the audience will establish a relationship with. This engages the audience with the film with the use of the trailer and allows them to decide if they want to see the film or not.
Editing:
There is editing used in the film trailer, however due to the film being made in the mid 1990s the editing is very simple, it involves the usual straight forward cuts to move from scene, This helps show some of the cuts from the film and allows the audience to get a brief understanding of the film and cause them to want to see the film.

Film Trailer Analysis - Pulp Fiction trailer.
Media language:
Text is used in a number of ways in the clip, at the beginning of the trailer it is used to show the audience the up and coming success of the film with such things as “ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED MOTION PICTURES OF THE YEAR”, this will encourage the audience to go and see the film. In this trailer text is used to help give a brief story line for the film, also it gives single words through out to show the types of episodes the audience should expect to see (as seen below).
The trailer also features a narrator, this is the main way the story line is explained and told to the audience. This helps the audience focus on what the film will feature, this will then lead them to wish to view the film. The main way in which the story line is told however is with the use if cuts and teasers from the film itself. The audience will see the characters featuring in the film and the type of characters they will play which will again, encourage them to want to view the film. The way this will entice the audience is through the methods of showing the most exciting and favourite parts of the film to help make the film look as good as possible.
Institutions:
The institution that is funding the film production is clearly shown at the start of the trailer, this is done to emphasise the professional nature of the film. MIRAMAX FILMS are a widely established film production company therefore suggesting this will be a successful film.
The genre of the film is crime thriller. It is easily established because of the use of guns and potential murder. This type of film is a widely known genre which will attract the audience. Audiences like to see the same type of genre because they can relate to it, however the audience also like to see a slight variation of the genre, the fact that this film is a crime thriller will attract the audience as the crime part of the film (at the time of this film release) was not seen in thrillers therefore it was slightly different, this is what makes this film so successful.
Representation:
The film trailer is represented in a different sort of way to many other film trailers; it is split up into different sections, with titles on each section as seen above. These methods of representation will allow the audience to relate and engage with the film trailer and gather a wide knowledge of the film; this will then allow them to decide if they want to see the film. The characters in the film are all represented as selfish people who only seem to look out for them self, this coupled with the fact that one of the characters is going to fall in love with the other (this is easy to see in the trailer). These types of characters will relate to a large variety of the target audience, thus causing them to want to view the film.
Audience:
The types of people this film will be aimed at are the type of people that like to be on edge constantly and who wish to try and guess the result of various episodes and activities. The film tries to relate to many different types of audience’s however, it will appeal to enjoy violence, love stories, action and thriller films because it covers all these genres. Each character represents different genres. For example one represents love, where as one represents violence and a thriller type nature.
Narrative:
The film is told in different sections, this allows the audience to relate to the trailer in more depth and detail. The trailer is narrated throughout using either text or a physical voice, to allow the audience to develop a greater understanding of the film. The main way in which the trailer is narrated is through the use of actors voices in the film clips. They speak and give hints of the type of activities they will be partaking in which will allow the audience to see what the film will contain.
Ideologies:
The ideologies of the film revolve around gang life and the events that will take place in that type of life. These ideologies do not necessarily relate to the audience, however the conventions of love, fighting, shooting, loyalty, crime and betrayal do relate to many different types of audiences and these ideologies are also featured in the film, this again, allows the film to be viewable to many different types of audiences.
Editing:
Throughout the trailer there are many different cuts and sound effects that emphasise the film. There are extremely quick cuts at the beginning to back up the fast flowing music to give the film an exciting feel; also the cuts are in time with the music which is very important. In the trailer there is a cleaver piece of fusion between the sound and what is being shown on screen. One of the characters presses a play button on a cassette player and as this is pressed the over lapping sound stops and another song begins to play plays.
Also the trailer features fade out cuts throughout, this ensures smooth transitions between scenes and shots to make easy viewing for the audience.

Film Trailer Analysis - Da Vinci code trailer.
Media language:
There is text used as we move through the film trailer to increase the tension and encourage the audience to continue to watch the film its self. Also non-diegetic sound is used to build up the tension and reveal the best parts of the film; this is typical of film trailers as it leaves the audience on a cliff hanger and causes them to want to see the film. In the trailer the actors are revealed, (as seen in the pictures below) this allows the audience to develop a slight knowledge on each character and what types of acts they will be playing, this also allows the audience to see who is featuring in the film. In the trailer there is also a narrator who gives a brief description of the film as the trailer unfolds, this gives the trailer a more dramatic and professional feel.
Institutions:
The institution that will be funding the film (Columbia ) is featured at the start of the trailer in order to establish who owns the production of the film.
Genre:
The genre of the film is mystery/ thriller, this is an unusual type of mixed genre, it will involve investigations into a specific topic (in this case religion) and in that will come a sense of thriller and ‘on edge’ entertainment, this is shown and established well in the trailer. The audience will be able to see that the film will have a sense of thriller immediately by the non-diegetic sound that is introduced. Also when the narrator explains a brief synopsis of the film it is clear that the film will include some sort of a mystery, Coupled together with the tension created with such things as the characters running through the street, this trailer offers a good in sight to the film.
Representation:
The trailer is represented in such a way that the target audience will be able to relate and debate about the film its self, this trailer causes the audience to wish to go and see the film. The actors are represented as closed minded people who seek the truth, and others that wish to hide it, a good dramatic combination. The place in which the film is set is represented as a historical setting, this fits the theme of the film as it looks back at the early stages of Christian life and how it all unravelled. The events that are represented in the trailer are some of the main parts of the film; the production team will do this in order to make the film look as good as possible for the audience, in turn causing the audience to want to see the film in full.
Audience:
The type of people who this film is aimed at, are people that believe in conspiracies and who seek the truth towards this certain topic. The film is aimed at the older generation as they will have slightly more knowledge on the main subject of the film; also the film is relatively complicated and would be hard to understand for younger generations; however the film is rated a 12A so this indicated that it would be suitable for younger viewers as the film does not feature any explicit imagery.
Narrative:
The storyline of the film is based on a murder, this then leads on to a mystery on Da Vinci’s paintings, this unravels secrets that the world was never meant to know. The trailer effectively shows this storyline, with the use of quick cuts and the narrator gradually explaining the synopsis of the film briefly at the start of the trailer. This sneak peek on the narrative of the film will cause the audience to want to view the film.
Ideologies:
The film represents a new type of story, one that contrasts to the original story of Christianity, this story is meant to be kept a secret but others are sent to try and find the truth. It represents new beliefs which will encourage and encourage the audience to watch the film.
Editing:
The trainer features many different cuts and transitions, the trailer features a cross fade affect, and this is where two scenes are edited in a way so that they overlap each other showing both shots for a short period of time. This effect is used to ensure a smooth transition between scenes in the trailer. Sound editing is also used in the trailer, this is mainly used to, again, ensure smooth transitions throughout the trailer but also to increase tension throughout the video to emphasise the genre of the film.

Main Ideas And Genre Of Film Trailer.
Why do people watch Thrillers and Romantic films?
When making film trailers this is a very important thing to consider I order to connect with the audience.
Thriller:
When watching a thriller, most people go through the same thought processes, ‘what would I do in this situation’ ‘who do I relate to the most in this film’. Also when i looked into what people enjoy about the film its self, the replies are ‘I enjoy the tension of the film’ ‘I like to be able to place my self in the situation of the victim and see how I would react’. What makes a thriller successful is the ability to interact with the audience and cause them to be in some way affected by the film.
Romance:
This is a highly popular genre of film that many people enjoy. This is because the main conventions of the film are, the love story, an obstacle to overcome, and the happy ending. However the main reason why people like to watch romance films, is because they like to put them self in the position of the actors, and wish they could live that life, it helps the audience escape into a world that gives people hope. Also the women enjoy watching this type of film because of the male actors that always are featured in romantic films.
Plot - Wife and husband are happily married, however what husband doesn’t know is that the wife has been having an affair with the husbands boss, a twist is that the wife does not know that the man she is cheating on her husband with is the husbands boss.
Plot with the application of the Todorov theory:
The state of equilibrium is set as the husband believes that the relationship is going well with his wife. The disruption of the equilibrium occurs when the wife cheats on the husband with the husband’s boss. The recognition of this disruption would be when the husband reads the texts on the wife’s phone, and realising she was having an affair. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption is when the husband takes matters in to his own hands and seeks vengeance against his boss. The return of a new equilibrium is the boss losing everything, his job as well as his freedom.

Uses and gratification theory:
This theory understands the mass communication; the theory focuses on the audience its self and what they will do with the media they have been given rather than what media will do to the people. The theory sates that the audience them self are not passive but take an active role in interpreting the media they have seen and applying it to there own lives. There are three main reasons why people consume media, firstly is ‘personal relationships’, this is where the audience will use the media for emotional interaction, for example, using soap operas in everyday life (east enders). Secondly will be the ‘personal identity’, this would be where the audience will construct there own identity from the actors in a certain piece of media text. Finally ‘Surveillance’ this is where the audience will gather knowledge from watching the cartain type of media text.
Opening Post Of A2 Media Studies.
My name is Matthew Archer and this year in A2 media studies I have chosen to create a film trailer.
The film genre we have chosen is a romantic thriller. I will be completing this task with two other students, Luke-Anthony Bailey and Patrick Gibbons.
The film we have chosen to produce will be a thriller and will offer a new type of story. It involves a wife who is cheating on her husband, and the husband being oblivious to this. However the person who the wife is seeing apposed to her husband, kills her because he has a shadowed past of being cheated on him self. This film will effectively challenging the audience’s idealisms on relationships and how justice should be served.
Target audience - Our target audience will be from the age of 15+, this is because this film appeals too many different aspects of genre, and the film will include the romance of a relationship, but at the same time the thrill of an affair. This is coupled with the shock of murder and the mystery of who committed this murder.
Plot - Wife and husband are happily married, however what husband doesn’t know is that the wife has been having an affair with the husbands boss, a twist is that the wife does not know that the man she is cheating on her husband with is the husbands boss.
Twist (selling point) – the person the wife is cheating on has a past experience of being cheated on by his wife, and he now goes hunting for wife’s willing to cheat on their husband, and brutally murders them. Also the man the wife is cheating on her husband with is the husbands wife, and the wife has no idea about this.
Trailer – Trailer begins with the husband and wife happily married, then cuts to wife and man she is cheating on her husband with, slow cuts at the beginning allow the audience to establish a connection and work out what the situation is between three characters. cutting in-between these two scenes begins to speed up coupled with the increase in sound, there is a loud bang as a plate/vase is smashed and dark scene is introduced. The camera pans over to reveal a knife/gun/dead body. This helps to create a cliff hanger and create tension for the audience and cause them to wish to view the film.
Film institution – BA productions, a new and upcoming film production company who specialise in thrillers, founded in late 2011, by Matthew Archer and Luke-Anthony Bailey. This will help us to create a new image for our film, showing the audience a new genre of film and entertainment. We help to connect the audience with the film as some of the characters can relate to the audience.

Main task: Photo shoot preparation and pictures I took
When I begin to create my final designs of the magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread I will need to have my own pictures to use in these parts of the magazine, so I have prepared a plan in which I can use to help me to produce these pictures, it is shown below:
These are the photos I have taken and the reason I have used them or not:
Main task: Contents page mind map ideas
For our main task we had to also create a contents page, to help me with the creation of this I have made a contents page mind map as you can see below. In this mind map of different ideas I have some things that I feel necessary to be included in the contents page, like big bold text, this will help to draw the reader into the magazine and make them want to read on. Also a suitable font will be needed, this is to ensure the reader can read the righting very easily; this is to help them process the information on the page quickly in order to minimize the change of the reader losing concentration on the magazine. The main thing however that is needed on the contents page is many different things to choose from, in other words, more content, this will interest the reader and cause them to want to read on and buy the magazine.
Main task: Magazine front cover drawn design and mock front cover design
For this task we will have to create a magazine font cover, before this I have made a drawn design of the front cover, this will hopefully help me with the creation of my final front cover. By doing this I have discovered various things that I will and will not include in my final design. In my design I will keep the black and red layout because I believe that it gives the magazine a professional look. Also I will stay with the large model o the front of the magazine; this will help attract the reader and help draw them into the magazine. Once the hand drawn design was developed I then made my mock front cover.
Hand drawn front cover design:
Main task: Double page spread drawn design
For our magazine we have to create a double page spread and here I have made a hand drawn design, I will base this on my real double page spread where I will produce on the computer. The design has a few things that I will try to use in the creation of my real magazine double page spread, such as the large picture of the artist on one page of the spread, this I believe is a good effect because it helps the reader to establish a connection with the artist. Also the black and red writing layout will be used in my final design; these two colours go well together and give the magazine a professional look.
